Exclusion Procedures for Common Z-Wave Devices

What is Exclusion?

If you’re switching hub platforms or installing a Z-Wave device that was previously paired with another smart home hub, you’ll need to go through theĀ exclusion procedure for each Z-Wave device before pairing it with your new hub. Z-Wave devices remember which hub they are paired with and exclusion tells them to forget that and be open to pairing with another hub.

I recently went through this when switching my home over from Smartthings to Hubitat. For those of you who may be unfamiliar with Hubitat, let’s just say it’s awesome and is now our go-to smart home hub. To cut to the chase, Hubitat executes commands locally without depending on cloud servers. It’s fast, secure, and robust with an active development community creating integrations for pretty much any smart home device.

One thing about my home is that it’s kind of a hodgepodge of smart home devices acquired through several years and more recently for testing purposes while determining our product inventory list. The exclusion process is different for each device and I found myself searching the Internet for instructions with multiple browser tabs open. I thought it would be advantageous to have a blog post with the exclusion instructions for devices in one place for easy reference and it might help others as well.

I’ll try to update this to be as inclusive a list as possible. If you’d like one added please reply in the comments below.
